SIPTRUNK.com Weekly Recap – SIP Developments
In case you missed the posts this week, we’ve gathered them all together for you, plus a couple industry articles, in one convenient location.
If there was a theme to the week, it would be “SIP Developments.”
Challenges of International SIP Trunking
This podcast from the UC Buyer talks with Tata Communications about the differences between North American and international SIP trunk deployments.
To date, the U.S. has done a good job of allowing carriers and customers to “evolve with SIP trunking.”
But lately the EU has begun to standardize regulations in Europe which has been a big help to carriers and customers and speeding up SIP trunking growth overseas.
No Security Needed with ShoreTel Solution
New ShoreTel hybrid cloud platform removes the need for customers to have an SBC and modify their firewall making it easier to keep their SIP trunk secure.
This new solution also allows users to migrate to the cloud at their own pace while continuing to use their existing equipment.
Revisiting the SIP Endpoint
Dave Michels at No Jitter comments on the evolution, or lack thereof, of the humble SIP endpoint even as the protocol has been enhanced and enjoyed widespread adoption.
“SIP trunks get most of the spotlight,” says Michels. “They are broadly supported, offer significant cost savings, and enable numerous benefits regarding quality and resilience.”
“The only real issue to decide is when to deploy. SIP endpoints are not as universal as SIP trunks. Here confusion and ambiguity have kept universal adoption at bay.”
Telecommuting – How Many People Work From Home?
SIP trunks are ideal for companies with satellite offices and remote workers. Here’s a glimpse at the latest telecommuting statistics.
The overall number of US employees that work from home is still low (less than 3%) but the number of telecommuters is growing.
Global Workplace Analytics’ research finds that:
- 50% of the US workforce holds a job that is compatible with at least partial telework and approximately 20-25% of the workforce teleworks at some frequency
- 80% to 90% of the US workforce says they would like to telework at least part time. Two to three days a week seems to be the sweet spot that allows for a balance of concentrative work (at home) and collaborative work (at the office).
- Fortune 1000 companies around the globe are entirely revamping their space around the fact that employees are already mobile. Studies repeatedly show they are not at their desk 50-60% of the time.
Stay tuned for more SIP trunking news – see you next week!
